Program Description

Event Details

Dr. Dorota Chudzicka, Associate Curator of Modern European Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts, will speak about the role of women artists in shaping the European avant-garde movements of the 20th century, from German Expressionism to Surrealism. Artworks long present in the DIA's collection and recent acquisitions highlight these achievements, revealing crucial contributions by Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gabriele Münter, and Alice Rahon, among others. The presentation will demonstrate the many ways in which the works undermine the art-historical status quo and enrich our understanding of modern art and history.
